Aayat and her aunt Fatima flee Kashmir as insurgency intensifies. Her mother is murdered by militants, forcing her father and uncle to send her to safety in Mallukot. The journey marks the beginning of a long separation from home that leads to a chance encounter with Harry in Mallukot.

In Mallukot, Harry, a carefree local, meets Aayat during Pammo's wedding preparations. He is instantly smitten, while Aayat is initially hesitant but warms to him as they spend time together. Their budding romance unfolds amid village life and family ties.

Pammo marries MP Singh, drawing the families closer. The next day, news of the Babri Masjid demolition sparks fear and prompts Aayat's family to flee to Mumbai. Harry is left heartbroken by Aayat's sudden departure, while his own future begins to diverge from hers.

Harry earns a place in the Indian Air Force and departs Mallukot to begin NDA training. The distance tests their bond as they pursue separate paths. The separation plants seeds for a future reunion that will hinge on fate.

In 1993, Aayat loses a relative in the Bombay bombings and moves to Edinburgh. She remains there for seven years, establishing a life far from Mallukot. This long separation remains a backdrop to their eventual reunion years later.

In 1999, Harry and Aayat unexpectedly reunite in Edinburgh. Harry is now a squadron leader on a special Air Force assignment, while Aayat's years in Edinburgh have shaped her resilience. The rekindled spark points toward a possible future together if circumstances allow it.

The Kargil War erupts, and Harry is recalled to India and posted to Jodhpur. Simultaneously, Aayat's father dies and her family moves back to Mallukot, forcing them into another period of separation. The distance and tragedy strain their relationship just as they were reconnecting.

Harry is selected to lead a bombing mission over Tiger Hill during the conflict. The operation succeeds, but his aircraft malfunctions and crash-lands, leaving his left arm semi-paralyzed. He spends two months recovering, grappling with the cost of duty and the longing for Aayat.

Around this period, Aayat travels to Ahmedabad and then New York to stay with Akram while her aunt returns home. The physical distance between her and Harry widens, complicating any hope of a shared life. Meanwhile, Harry remains focused on his duties and personal healing.

The 11 September 2001 attacks unleash a surge in hate crimes against Muslims in the USA and Europe. Akram and Aayat return to Ahmedabad, while Harry happens to be in the same city for a friend's wedding. The turbulence pushes their lives toward an uncertain future.

In 2002, Ahmedabad is rocked by riots. Aayat and Harry, sheltering from the violence, rescue a horse and a baby girl as they search for safety. The chaotic night tests their courage and solidifies their resolve to face the future together.

The couple finally marries, adopts a baby girl, and is expecting a child. The epilogue presents a hopeful future that crowns years of separation with a shared life and growing family. Love and resilience prevail over war, displacement, and fear.
