Master of the World

John Strock, Charles Bronson, a US government agent hired to monitor volcanic activity, joins Dorothy Prudent Mary Webster, her fiancé Phillip Evans David Frankham, and Dorothy’s father Prudent Henry Hull on a perilous high‑altitude excursion that ends with Robur’s airship seizure of the group. Robur, a man driven by a quasi-metaphysical dream of enforcing world peace through unmatched power, has been circling the globe with a fiercely loyal crew who share his fanaticism. He commands his airship, the Prudent, and his hidden project, the Albatross, a craft he has been refining even as he broadcasts a troubling biblical passage over a voice amplifier, stoking religious fears in a nearby town.

The captives quickly learn how Robur’s machine operates and glimpse a striking, almost quaintly practical future—electrical power generated by crossing “lines of magnetic force,” a description that hints at a dynamo’s core principle. The mood aboard is tense and uncertain: the prisoners plot, but trust is a fragile thing, especially with Strock sometimes aligning with Robur’s view, while other moments reveal his stubborn insistence on his own code of conduct. Amid moments of peril, Strock saves Evans’ life, and in a quiet confession explains that his oath to Robur was never truly binding; as a captive, he feels free to act without gallantry’s constraints.

Robur’s true mission unfolds as he takes aim at humanity’s long-standing wars, attempting to erase nations’ means of waging conflict. Yet a hostile desert encounter wounds Robur and leaves the Albatross damaged, forcing a precarious retreat to a remote island for repairs. As the anchor line finally yields, the Albatross lifts—but it is a fragile escape. A delayed gunpowder blast cripples the ship, and Robur orders his crew to abandon ship. Yet the men resist the order, gathering in Robur’s quarters as he reads from Isaiah 2:4, the famous prophecy of swords being turned into plowshares.
