Four days after getting caught in a minefield, Captain Archer and Commander Tucker inspect the damage to the Enterprise. With repairs forecast to take months and a return to Jupiter Station measured in years, Archer makes a practical call: they need outside help. He orders Ensign Sato to broadcast a general distress call, hoping for a quicker fix. A Tellarite freighter replies, delivering a garbled message that includes coordinates pointing to an automated repair facility—three days away at Warp 2.
When the Enterprise reaches the facility, a precise scan is followed by a rapid reconfiguration of the station to suit the crew’s needs. The ship docks while the station presents a steep repair price: 200 liters of warp plasma. Thanks to its impressive replication technology, the facility swears it can complete all repairs in a little over a day—specifically 34.2 hours. Archer agrees, though a nagging sense tells him not everything is as it seems. Tucker’s curiosity about the station’s advanced systems grows, and he talks Reed into visiting the station’s computer. Their attempt to slip in via a ventilation duct triggers an alarm, and they are beamed back to the Enterprise’s bridge. Archer’s temper flares at the disruption, and he confines them to their quarters for the duration of the stay.
Meanwhile, a counterfeit message—posing as from Archer—leads Ensign Mayweather to an area under repair. Soon after, Mayweather’s body is discovered, described as the result of an electrical shock. Doctor Phlox quickly concludes that the corpse is a superbly accurate replica, prompting Archer to vow to locate the real Mayweather and uncover what the station is really doing.
Tucker engineers a distraction that again meddles with the station’s computer, and Reed once more trips an alarm. This gives Sub-Commander T’Pol and Archer entry to a computer room that is crowded with bodies—an apparent stockpile of beings from different species, including a Klingon, a Vulcan, and a Cardassian—suggesting the station is using living forms to augment its processing power. Mayweather is eventually found and rescued, but at that moment the station launches a counterattack against the Enterprise in retaliation for the intrusion.
In a decisive move, Archer detonates the warp-plasma payment, destroying the station and escaping the ensuing chaos. As the Enterprise reduces speed and disengages, the wreckage of the station begins to repair itself, hinting at a lingering, unresolved threat even in defeat. The crew breathes a cautious sigh of relief, mindful that the station’s astonishing technology could reassemble and return in another form.
