César runs a bustling bar on the Marseille port, helped by his 23‑year‑old son Marius. Childhood friends Fanny and Marius are in love, yet Marius dreams of far‑off seas whenever a ship whistles. When the wealthy M. Panisse courts Fanny and a departing clipper offers Marius a deckhand job, the pair must choose between love and adventure, while César, generous and wise, offers his guidance.
