Maid’s Night Out

Playboy Bill Norman, Allan Lane, wants to escape a six-month expedition to study tropical fish and instead take a freer path in life. His plan collides with the reality of his wealthy father, George Irving who plays Mr. Norman, who isn’t about to hand over a fortune without testing his son. They strike a wager: Bill must work 30 days at the family dairy—without making a single mistake—before his expedition dreams can become real. To Bill’s surprise, the consequence of the bet lands him on the dairy floor, delivering milk from dawn to dusk rather than steering a yacht toward distant seas.

On his route through the town, Bill meets Sheila Harrison, a socialite whom he initially mistakes for a maid. Sheila Joan Fontaine and her mother, Mrs. Harrison Hedda Hopper, are mired in financial trouble, unable to pay bills or even the loyal maid, Mary, who is played by Hilda Vaughn. Sheila’s mother clings to a plan: she hopes Sheila will marry wealthy Wally Martin, a match Sheila does not want. Sheila herself resists the arrangement, and Bill’s genuine charm begins to win her over, even as he tries to keep up with the demands of the job and the delicate social web surrounding them.

A ballroom confrontation tests Bill and Sheila’s budding romance. A misreading by Mary—seeing Hogan’s milk truck as a kidnapping—throws the situation into even sharper relief and brings the police into the chase.

In a turn of daring and cooperation, Sheila disguises herself in a milk delivery uniform to work the final shift of the bet. Bill is bailed out and hastens to catch up with her, racing to complete the milk rounds before time runs out. The pair are pursued, but they manage to finish their rounds with only seconds to spare and return to the dairy as the clock ticks down. The close call reveals the truth of the relationships: the truth about Bill’s identity and the bonds he shares with Sheila become clear, and Mr. Norman and Mrs. Harrison recognize that their children’s happiness hinges on mutual affection rather than social convenience.
