In the chill of a winter season, a quiet hill station near Vagamon becomes the backdrop for a heartfelt, unraveling tale centered around Malgudi National Public School, a place notable for its unusual calendar where the school goes on a “winter vacation” instead of a summer one. Here, two nine-year-old students, Atheena and Milan, navigate the small world of their classroom and playground, each bringing a distinct temperament into the shared space of learning and play.

Atheena is a solemn, introspective girl who has been struggling with the burden of her father’s sudden death. Referred to a psychiatrist, she arrives at the school in an effort to recover from haunting memories that linger long after the tragedy, her father’s spectacles clutched tightly in her hands as a tangible link to a world she cannot fully let go of. Milan, by contrast, is a lively troublemaker, a nine-year-old boy whose mischievous energy tests the patience of teachers and peers alike. Despite their stark differences, the pair form a bond that grows stronger as they spend time together, discovering that their divergent personalities can still complement one another.

Amid this ordinary school life enters Zephan, the film’s focal character and an escaped convict. A flashback reveals his past: he was an artist and craftsman who lived peacefully with his wife and daughter in a nearby village. A night intruded by four unknown men upends everything, forcing him to flee with a heavy sense of guilt and fear. He seeks shelter in an abandoned house adjacent to the school, a place that becomes the stage for the film’s emotional core. Though injured and wary, he does not reveal his identity or his burden to the children who cross his path, yet their presence awakens a sense of compassion in him as well.

The meeting between Zephan and the two children takes place at that desolate house behind the school. What begins with fear gradually shifts into sympathy as Atheena and Milan see him more clearly and recognize a vulnerability beneath his tough exterior. The kids offer him food, water, and medicine, and in return he shares glimpses of his world through his remarkable Origami-inspired art, which impresses them and deepens their trust. The encounter marks the start of a fragile alliance built on care and curiosity, a bridge between their fragile worlds and his precarious reality.

As winter deepens, the principal—Principal—declares vacation, and Zephan senses this pause could be the perfect window to hide away and plot his escape. On the eve of departure, Atheena realizes she has left behind her father’s spectacles. With Milan, she quietly slips away from the safety of the school and back toward the hostel, hoping to retrieve the cherished keepsake. In a turn of events, the hostel doors are unexpectedly secured by a careless security guard, and the bus carrying returning students pulls away without them, leaving the two friends stranded.

The second half of the story follows forty-eight tense hours during which the children and Zephan must survive thirst, hunger, cold, and fear. Milan attempts a daring escape through a bathroom window, only to tumble onto a lower roof, injuring himself in the fall. Meanwhile, Zephan, alerted by news reports of their disappearance, returns to the school and spots Milan on the roof. He shouts to him, and in a chaotic moment, Milan slips again, yet Zephan manages to catch him before harm comes to him. After locating Atheena, Zephan transports them to the stairs that lead toward the school office, a small glimmer of safety in the growing peril.

With the situation growing more dire, Zephan heads to a nearby shop in search of water, only to find it closed. The surrounding police presence intensifies as the reality of their predicament sinks in, and he ultimately decides to surrender so that the authorities can locate and rescue the children. Their rescue comes in a hospital bed and then back to a home waiting with relieved parents, a bittersweet restoration of ordinary life. On the journey home, Atheena spots Zephan kneeling on a rock, with police officers looming behind him. She pleads with her mother to stop, while her mother pursues, but before they can intervene, the police shoot Zephan in the head. The shock of the act silences Atheena as she realizes what has happened, and she is quietly taken home by her mother.

In a final, poignant turn, Zephan had asked the police to enroll his daughter Jenny in Malgudi School and to look after her, mentioning that two children would help care for her. The story closes with Atheena and Milan sharing a bench with Jenny, Zephan’s daughter, a quiet scene that hints at a fragile hope born from hardship and the bonds forged in crisis.
