In a flashback from the 1990s, Kolya hides aboard a freight train during a school day while Vasya runs for help. Their father is called to intervene, and he stops the train, revealing the boys’ complicated mix of love and shame toward their father. The moment plants the seeds of a bond that will later be tested by time and absence.

The story shifts to 2018. Kolya works as a minibus driver and shares a cramped life with his mother, dealing with a bad back. Vasya is a married police officer with a young child, navigating his own responsibilities and tensions in the family.

Kolya's fight with another driver leads his boss, who is also his stepfather, to suspend him for a month and reassign him to a different route. The punishment strains their already fraught relationship and puts Kolya under financial pressure.

Vasya is called to calm a violent man and then informs his wife's father of his plan to study to become an investigator. The father is opposed, arguing he should focus on supporting his family instead. This creates a rift around career choices and familial duty.

Kolya learns from the Luxembourg consulate that their father is dying. Their mother insists they abandon their father, who left the family long ago, while Kolya decides to go despite her wishes. Vasya discourages the trip, creating a key point of tension between the brothers.

Against his mother's wishes, Kolya decides to visit his father, whom he sees as his only true friend. However, a series of unforeseen events prevents the trip from going smoothly. The decision marks the start of a quest that will redefine their loyalties.

While receiving back treatment, Kolya meets Uncle Slava, an acquaintance of his father, who tells him a version of events that contradicts what Kolya believed. The revelation unsettles Kolya and shifts his understanding of his father's past.

As Kolya's minibus runs, an elderly passenger, Larisa Petrovna, is injured. His situation spirals: he is placed under house arrest and, after a failed attempt to escape, is fitted with a tracking bracelet. The sequence dramatically constrains his freedom.

Kolya attempts to reconcile with Larisa, but she resists his help, leaving him feeling ineffective. In parallel, Vasya misses a career promotion, further straining the relationship between the brothers and compounding their troubles.

It becomes clear that Kolya has been involved in selling drugs, a discovery that carries the threat of a five-year prison sentence. Vasya's colleague urges him to ensure his brother 'disappears' from police oversight, escalating the danger.

With time running out, Vasya decides to take his brother to Luxembourg as soon as possible to reach their father and avoid prison. The plan reframes the brothers' priorities and propels the journey abroad.

The brothers arrive in Luxembourg, and Kolya goes to visit the ward without waiting for permission, resulting in them being kicked out of the hospital. An embassy employee helps them discover that their father died days earlier, transforming their understanding of the inheritance they expected.

The brothers learn their father lived a modest life as a security guard who lost his wages on bets. They say goodbye to his body in the morgue, uncertain if it is really him. Kolya also discovers an arrest threat in Ukraine and, after reuniting with Vasya, chooses to remain in Luxembourg with his brother.
