Lucky Jordan

Lucky Jordan is drafted into World War II and assigned to a training base near his New York City office. He dodges the rigors of boot camp by hiding in the unit's canteen, displaying his streetwise instincts. His deception is uncovered when Jill Evans reports him to the base colonel.

As punishment for his behavior, Lucky is sent to the base stockade. He contemplates his options from confinement while remaining outwardly defiant. The restriction sets the stage for his later escape.

Lucky escapes the stockade by stealing an army engineer's car and driving away from the base. He briefly enjoys freedom before the pursuit resumes on the open road. The escape marks a turning point in his wartime path.

Outside the camp, two thugs crash Lucky’s escape attempt and knock him off the road. Jill Evans arrives at the scene and forces Lucky to accompany her to the city. During their travel, she angrily discards a briefcase containing army documents.

Back at Lucky’s headquarters, Slip warns that the two men were after the discarded briefcase. An enemy spy ring has offered $50,000 for it, revealing a larger plot in motion. Lucky resolves to secure the contents and protect the information.

Lucky retrieves the briefcase and its contents, and orders Slip to arrange an exchange. Later, the thugs ambush him again, knock him unconscious, and steal the papers. The chase underscores the value of the information.

Lucky tracks the spy ring to a botanical preserve on Long Island where Slip and Kilpatrick hold the papers. He grabs the documents and escapes, stashing them and an explanatory note inside a man's umbrella. The preserve’s exits are locked, preventing easy escape.

Jill trails Lucky to the preserve and asks a guard to call authorities, but Kilpatrick disguised as a government agent manipulates the guard. He deceives Jill, steering her into aiding in Lucky’s capture unwittingly. The ruse deepens the danger and delays rescue.

Herr Kesselman, the spy ring's chief, interrogates Lucky, threatening torture to extract the location of the papers. Lucky invents a story about where the papers are hidden, buying time. When left alone with Kesselman and a guard, Lucky seizes the guard’s gun.

Lucky signals his willingness to surrender the papers to the government, leveraging the situation to bring the ring to justice. The FBI arrives and arrests the entire spy ring, ending the immediate threat. The scene sets up the final consequences for Lucky's wartime antics.
