Lieutenant Robin “Rob” Crusoe is forced to eject from his Navy aircraft during a routine mission, plunging into the ocean. He drifts in a life raft for days and nights until he finally lands on a desolate, uninhabited island. On the shore, he quickly adapts: he builds a sturdy shelter, fashions new clothes from whatever materials he can find, and begins to explore his surroundings with a cautious curiosity. His scavenging leads him to an abandoned World War II submarine, a discovery that changes everything. Inside the submarine, he encounters a NASA chimpanzee astronaut named Floyd, who becomes an unexpected partner in survival.
With the submarine’s tools and blueprints, Crusoe and Floyd transform their island life. They construct a small Japanese pavilion as a sign of civilization in a wild place, lay out a golf course for recreation, and even set up a whimsical mail-delivery system that sends messages to his fiancée out to sea, using bottles as makeshift couriers. This blend of ingenuity and whimsy marks Crusoe’s effort to impose a sense of normalcy on his extraordinary situation.
Soon the island shows it isn’t as empty as it seems when he meets a beautiful island girl, Wednesday. She shares her plight and reveals that her chieftain father, Tanamashu, intends to sacrifice Wednesday and her sisters to Kaboona, a colossal effigy that the islanders claim to commune with. The arrival of Tanamashu triggers a dramatic clash: Crusoe uses gear salvaged from the submarine to confront the threat, culminating in the destruction of the ominous Kaboona statue.
After this hard-won victory, Crusoe and Tanamashu reach a tense peace. Yet when Crusoe makes it clear that he does not wish to marry Wednesday, his decision sparks the ire of the island community, forcing him to flee. He’s soon pursued by a furious mob of island women, a chase that ends with a narrow save when a U.S. Navy helicopter appears overhead. Crusoe and Floyd manage to escape, boarding a carrier deck where a large crowd gathers to welcome them home. In the spotlight of the homecoming, Floyd steals the show, leaving the crew and spectators buzzing about their remarkable arrival.
