An early Anatole Litvak talkie, adapted from a play by Tristan Bernard and Charles Henry Hirsch, follows Lilac (Marcelle Roméo) who moves among Paris’s criminal underworld. She falls for detective André Luguet, but duty prevails and he ultimately hands her to the police. Made for $120,000, Coeur de Lilas was among France’s costliest 1931 productions and recouped its budget at the box office.
