Victor Berthier, a fundamentally decent but intensely jealous man, murders his wife in a jealous rage. After serving several years on a chain‑gang and earning release for good behavior, he rejoices at the chance to return to Paris and see his daughter Lise again. His hope is shattered when he learns that Lise, under the influence of her lover and pimp André, has unwittingly become involved in a murder.
