To perform the resurrection, Casey collects artifacts from her mother's life, including locks of hair from her hairbrush. She compiles these items as part of the ritual described in the book. The preparation underscores her grief and desperation.

Drew McDonald, a coworker and love interest of Casey's father, gifts Casey an Eve doll and brushes its hair with Casey's hairbrush. Strands from the doll stick to the brush as Casey mutters the incantation. The magic misfires and affects the doll instead of Casey's mother.
