Alain Resnais retains Ayckbourn's six visible characters, unseen dying George, amateur rehearsals, resurfacing affairs and rival offers to accompany him on a final holiday. French actors speak French while the story remains explicitly in Yorkshire, and stylized painted exteriors, theatrical entrances and an animated mole celebrate rather than conceal the stage origin. The screenplay trims and rearranges dialogue, but George's absence and the couples' changing interpretations remain the exact dramatic engine.
