Will Spann and Lisa are en route to Lisa's parents' house when they stop at a gas station. Lisa goes inside to buy bottled water and never returns to the car, triggering panic. Will searches the station for her, finds only her belongings, and calls 911 to report her missing; the call is routed to Detective Paterson.

Will's missing-person report reaches Detective Paterson, who tells him to stay put and await further instructions. The detective's cautious approach sets the tone for the investigation. Will is left waiting and increasingly anxious as leads remain elusive.
