Arthur, a once-respected British archaeologist, finds himself back in Italy after serving time in prison for stealing precious artifacts from ancient tombs. His illegal dealings were primarily orchestrated with an art dealer named Spartaco. Upon his return, Arthur seeks refuge at the family home of his ex-girlfriend, Flora, where he unexpectedly meets Italia, Flora’s live-in maid and her student. The shadow of his past looms large as Beniamina, his former love, has gone missing under mysterious circumstances, yet Flora remains steadfast in her belief that she will return one day.

Struggling to fit in, Arthur faces the hostile behavior of Beniamina’s sisters, who are increasingly frustrated by his presence and accused of taking advantage of their mother’s kindness. They attempt to find him employment, but he stubbornly refuses, still haunted by the aftereffects of his imprisonment. These circumstances compound as Arthur battles a severe cold, worsened by his inadequate living conditions, lacking both suitable clothing and proper heating in his dilapidated hut.

The following morning, Flora sends Italia to check on Arthur, bringing him coffee and a thermometer. As Italia explores his humble abode, Arthur’s life takes a dramatic turn when he discovers his carefully buried artifacts are missing. In a fit of rage and desperation, he confronts his gang at their hideout, and after a fraught exchange, they return his stolen items, promising to mend their frayed friendship. Grudgingly, Arthur joins them for the lively Epiphany celebrations in town, an event that sparks hope for a fresh start.

During the festivities, a local farmer seeks Arthur’s expertise in locating a tomb on his land. Seizing the moment, Arthur and his crew embark on their next escapade to unearth hidden treasures, driven by greed and thrill. As they dig, Arthur’s unique ability to perceive ‘chimeras’—mysterious visions—guides him to the tomb’s location, where his skills become integral to the group. Even as Arthur feigns illness to plan a night raid for valuable Etruscan grave goods, he finds a burgeoning connection with Italia that adds complexity to his already tumultuous life.

One fateful evening, amidst the backdrop of a beach dance, Arthur, entwined in his emotions, confesses his growing affection for Italia. However, their blossoming bond is interrupted by a moment of reckoning when Italia discovers the truth about Arthur’s criminal activities. Distressed at the thought of what Beniamina would think if she were here, Italia gives him an ultimatum, which he fails to comprehend. Despair leads Arthur and his friends deeper into their destructive lifestyle, where they unearth a statue of Artume inside a tomb. However, chaos unfolds when his companions decide to decapitate the sacred figure, much to Arthur’s horror, as he is profoundly affected by the artifact’s beauty. Suddenly, the tranquility is shattered by the sound of police sirens, prompting a frantic escape with the detached head of the statue, unaware that they have been outsmarted by other tomb raiders.

As tensions escalate, Flora’s family uncovers Italia’s secret—she had been hiding her children in her room, leading to her banishment. Meanwhile, Melodie—the young photographer in their gang—leads them to Spartaco, her aunt, to negotiate the future of the statue’s stolen head. When Arthur’s moment of reckoning arrives, he realizes the importance of the artifact and throws it into the depths of the sea, spurning his gang’s attempts to leverage it for profit.
