In the bustling streets of 1940s Shanghai, petty criminals Sing and Bone dream of rising through the ranks of the Axe Gang. Their journey begins with a bold plan to intimidate the residents of Pigsty Alley, attempting to masquerade as gang members in hopes of gaining notoriety.

The duo's antics draw the attention of the real Axe Gang, who seek to teach them a lesson. This confrontation escalates into a chaotic showdown, threatening the peaceful lives of the unsuspecting villagers in Pigsty Alley.

Three residents of Pigsty Alley—Coolie, Tailor, and Donut—reveal their hidden talents as kung fu masters. They effortlessly thwart the initial attack from the Axe Gang, showcasing their impressive fighting skills and protecting their home.

In a desperate attempt to protect the kung fu masters from Brother Sum's impending wrath, the Landlady evicts Coolie, Tailor, and Donut. This action leaves the alley's defense vulnerable just as the Axe Gang prepares for retaliation.

Brother Sum captures Sing and Bone, exposing their fraudulent attempt to join the Axe Gang. He threatens them with execution, but the duo manages a narrow escape, capturing Brother Sum's interest and leading to a twisted deal for gang membership.

Haunted by childhood humiliation, Sing recalls a painful memory involving a mute girl named Fong. This recollection fuels his resolve to abandon heroism in favor of a villainous life within the Axe Gang, solidifying his dark path.

Determined to prove themselves, Sing and Bone attempt to assassinate the Landlady but make a hasty retreat instead. Their failed plan only underscores the growing tension between them and the true members of the Axe Gang.

While in hiding, Sing stumbles upon a traffic pulpit where he experiences miraculous healing. This unexpected moment of recovery instills him with new hope and sets the stage for his further challenges against Brother Sum.

Brother Sum, seeking revenge, recruits two Harpists armed with a magical guzheng to neutralize the kung fu masters of Pigsty Alley. However, despite their skills, the Harpists eventually encounter a challenge they can't overcome against the Landlady and Landlord.

In a surprising twist, Sing runs into an ice cream vendor who he recognizes as Fong, stirring painful memories. Overwhelmed with emotion, he reacts destructively and leaves, reflecting on his lost opportunities and unresolved feelings.

Seizing an opportunity to prove his worth, Sing liberates the notorious assassin known as the Beast from a mental institution. This act earns him favor with Brother Sum but marks a turning point in Sing's journey as he embraces darker alliances.

Initially skeptical of the Beast, Brother Sum quickly changes his tune after witnessing the Beast's astounding ability to halt a bullet mid-flight. This display of power culminates in a fierce showdown between the Beast and the Pigsty Alley defenders.

Realizing the errors of his path, Sing decides to rebel against the Beast. This decisive confrontation leads to a brutal retaliation from the Beast, leaving Sing unconscious and furthering his development as a character.

After a rapid recovery, the Landlady recognizes Sing's inherent kung fu talents and decides to train him. With newly acquired abilities, he confronts the remaining Axe Gang members and faces the Beast once more, ready for a decisive battle.

With the Axe Gang defeated, Sing and Bone embark on a new venture by opening a candy shop featuring Fong's lollipop as their logo. In a poignant moment, Fong visits the shop, offering a chance for reconciliation and a hint at a renewed future.
