Kumari

An elder grandmother begins a tale about a goddess who visited the Earth and, taken by the planet’s beauty, chose not to return to the heavens. She marries a mortal and bears two children, Chathan and Gari Devan, who neither look fully divine nor fully human and who wield immense, uncontrollable power. The siblings quarrel and wreak havoc, ultimately destroying the world and forcing the goddess to bind Chathan to the mountains and Gari Devan to the land before returning to her celestial home. Humans, sensing their strength, then begin to worship them, hoping to harness that power for mankind’s benefit.

In a small village, a harsh, conservative landlord Thuppan Thampuran, Shivajith Padmanabhan, rules with cruelty and scorns people from lower castes. A young, orphans—Chokkan—secretly meets Chathan and brings him food in exchange for precious gems. Thuppan’s generous wife Nangakutty, Tanvi Ram, befriends Chokkan and often chats with him. One day, while Chokkan is away, Nangakutty secretly eats forest mangoes, which Thuppan considers a sin for the supposed outcast, and serves them to him in a meal. Thuppan’s sense of impurity drives him to bathe in the family pond, where he discovers Chokkan washing himself and, in a fit of anger, kills him with a rock. Chathan’s curse falls on the village—stones rain down and deadly disease follows—forcing Thuppan to seek the protection of Gari Devan to save his clan.

Twelve generations later, Kumari, an orphan raised by her uncles with her brother Jayan, marries Dhruvan, a descendant of Thuppan, despite Jayan’s resistance. Kumari is drawn to the forest by Chokkan’s presence, but Lakshmi, Swasika (Dhruvan’s wife and Achyuthan’s sister-in-law), warns that their family’s entry into the forest is forbidden and that Chathan’s anger still governs their fate. She also reveals that Thuppan had once called on Gari Devan for protection. When Kumari later confronts Dhruvan after witnessing him mistreat his uncle Velyachan and his brother Achyuthan, she learns that Dhruvan’s sense of neglect by his family has fueled his own feelings of isolation and a desire for power. Despite the tension, Kumari sees that what Dhruvan needs most is love, and she begins to care for him.

As Kumari’s fascination with Chokkan grows, she enters the forest and encounters Muthamma, Surabhi Lakshmi, who reveals that Kumari is carrying a child and that this child may be in danger if Dhruvan’s ambitions prevail. Muthamma directs Kumari to meet her across a river so she can take her to Chathan, the protector of the unborn child. Kumari returns home shaken and learns that she is pregnant. The family’s happiness is muted, for only Dhruvan seems to feel pride; the rest of the clan worry that the future will demand a terrible sacrifice. Dhruvan starts to plot power, even cutting off two fingers to resemble Gari Devan, a gesture that provokes a brutal clash with Achyuthan, who taunts him.

Velyachan, Spadikam George the loyal uncle, steps in and proclaims that Dhruvan will become the village’s lord, the first of the next generation to bear a true heir. Lakshmi later confesses that she herself never bore children for a hidden reason, explaining the village’s cycle of ritual sacrifice that has haunted Thuppan’s line for generations. Twelve generations earlier, Thuppan sacrificed his own son to appease Gari Devan, a ritual that ended only because Gari Devan’s protection shielded the family for a time. Now Kumari’s pregnancy threatens to restart the cycle, and Lakshmi reveals that Thuppan has been alive all along, concealed in the attic, biding time for the next ritual. When Velyachan confronts Lakshmi about revealing this, he kills her and the truth seems to vanish into tragedy.

Grief-stricken, Kumari makes her way across the river to Muthamma’s community, where the people worship Chathan and protect Kumari and her unborn child. Muthamma gives Kumari a small token to hide in her home and instructs her in a few incantations to read. Back in the village, Velyachan begins training Dhruvan for the proposed sacrifice, while Parijatham, Shruthy Menon, encourages Achyuthan to seek greater authority by visiting Chathan, though the attempt ends when Chathan destroys him. Meanwhile, Velyachan dies from a snake bite, and Dhruvan steps into the role of the family’s next lord as the curse of Chathan begins to surface again.

A fire ravages the family home, and Dhruvan becomes convinced that someone is conspiring against him and has taken Chathan’s side. He leads his henchmen into the forest to confront Chathan’s worshippers, beating them in anger. The truth nears Kumari when Muthamma reveals that Kumari herself is seen as someone who would resist the monstrous plan. Dhruvan confines Kumari to a room while her brother Jayan visits to take her away, but Dhruvan murders Jayan in a brutal moment of rage, leaving Kumari heartbroken and terrified. Thuppan, burdened by guilt for his past sins, encourages Kumari to return to the goddess—Nangakutty’s goddess, the one she had ignored—and to find her, even as the earlier godly struggle resurfaces.

In a crisis-filled moment, Kumari discovers the idol of the old goddess along with a dagger she had glimpsed in her nightmares. She gives birth to a healthy boy, but Dhruvan ambushes her shortly after and seizes the child for sacrifice, calling Gari Devan to witness. Kumari fights back with the dagger, as Muthamma’s people chant to Chathan from the forest. Chathan himself arrives, determined to honor his earlier vow to Kumari and to bring an end to the long-standing blood feud. He battles Gari Devan and, with Kumari’s help, defeats the demigod by cutting off Gari Devan’s tongue, though the fate of Gari Devan remains uncertain.

In the aftermath, Kumari mourns and then rises as a wiser village landlady, showing greater mercy and humanity than the men who once ruled. Her son, now growing up, finds Chokkan standing in the forest and signals that he may become Chathan’s ally in the days to come. The story closes as Kumari steers a community toward a new balance—one in which power is tempered by care, and the old curses begin to loosen their grip on the people.
