German outlaw Erik Klaus hides a treasure deep in the Arizona desert and leaves chilling warnings for anyone who would seek it. He then disappears, leaving behind a legend about a dangerous artifact and the fate that awaits treasure hunters. The warnings foreshadow a curse tied to fire and the creature Krampus.

Years after 1898, a group of cowboys uncovers the loot and the mysterious artifact known as the summoning stone. They realize that exposure to open flames can awaken Krampus. The stone's discovery links the past to the present danger looming over the land.

When the stone is dropped onto a lantern or exposed to fire, Krampus is summoned. The creature immediately begins a murderous rampage, slaughtering the cowboys at the site. The desert eruption of violence marks the stone as a deadly relic.

Decades after the initial massacre, Cooper, a seasoned hunter, has spent his life studying Krampus and survives an earlier encounter. He becomes the keeper of lore about the creature and its weaknesses. He later shares that Krampus can be banished back to Hell by earth and can be drawn into traps.

Decades later, Will and Amber travel to Arizona to spend Christmas with Amber's parents and extended family. The visit brings together a blended group including Will, Amber, their children, and Amber's environmentalist brother. The sense of holiday peace is established before the danger returns.

While gold panning in a creek near the Henderson home, Tommy discovers the summoning stone. The discovery silently foreshadows the awakening of Krampus. The stone's presence begins to alter the mood of the Christmas visit.

Troy accidentally burns the summoning stone with a lit cigarette, releasing Krampus. The creature begins its hunt, beginning with violent acts as the family and neighbors realize the danger they face. The spark that starts the carnage isolates the family from safety.

Krampus slaughters Will, Dale, Alice, and Amber as the family awaits police intervention. Bonnie uses the Hendersons' phone to call 911, signaling the start of a desperate attempt to survive. The home becomes a scene of panic and destruction.

David, Vivian, Fiona, Troy, Tommy and Bonnie attempt to flee in a car, hoping to escape the carnage. The car crash kills Vivian, and David fights Krampus to buy time for the others, ultimately being ripped to pieces. The group is fragmented and terrified, with death closing in.

Bonnie, Fiona, Troy and Tommy reach Cooper's trail and meet Cooper, who has studied Krampus for years. He explains the legend: the creature is summoned by fire and can be banished by earth. The survivors prepare a trap that could end the threat.

The group uses the summoning stone to lure Krampus into an abandoned mine shaft. Cooper sacrifices himself to collapse the cavern with TNT, burying the monster and buying the others a chance to escape. The plan hinges on earth sealing Krampus away.

morning reveals the aftermath: Bonnie, Tommy and Fiona are found by state trooper Dan. Troy, who has become separated, is mauled by a baby Krampus that hatched from the summoning stone. The survivors brace for a future they cannot foresee.
