Just Before Dawn

Dr. Ordway is summoned to a neighbor's party where Walter Foster collapses from what appears to be a diabetic seizure. He administers insulin using Walter's own supplies, but Walter dies shortly after the injection. The death triggers Ordway to suspect foul play rather than natural causes.

Ordway contacts Inspector Burns, who concludes that Walter was poisoned. The finding shifts the focus to the party guests and multiplies the stakes of the investigation. Ordway agrees to aid in the case and becomes a key contributor to the investigation.

Ordway secures the guest list and begins interrogating attendees, starting with Walter's sister Claire Foster. Claire offers little information beyond noting tensions among the guests and her brother's recent behavior. The questioning marks the formal start of the homicide inquiry.

Claire mentions Walter's cryptic last words, 'I've given you one face,' which hints at deception rather than simple motives. She claims to know nothing more about the crime, but the remark suggests a concealed identity or duplicity among the guests. Ordway records this clue for later analysis.

Robert questions Jack Swayne, Claire's lover and owner of a health institute. Jack explains the feud with Walter over Claire and mentions Walter's financial troubles. The interview adds motive layers related to relationships and money.

Ordway visits attorney Allen S. Tobin to learn how Walter spent his inheritance. Tobin reveals Walter squandered much of the funds and had asked to borrow more from his sister. The financial history deepens the sense that motives could be financial as well as personal.

Claire calls Robert to come to her apartment urgently, but by the time he arrives the home is empty and Claire has disappeared. The kidnapper is later identified as Casper, redirecting the investigation toward a kidnapping alongside murder. Robert resolves to pursue both crimes with renewed urgency.

Ordway checks Harriet, Walter's neighbor, and learns they are selling their house. A real estate agent later explains that the sale is due to a divorce, not fear of a killer. Clyde then reveals Harriet's romantic ties to Walter and her financial involvement, tying additional motives to the people closest to Walter.

Robert learns Connie Day works at a mortuary and arranges a meeting, but Connie is locked in her office by a colleague suspecting her of blackmail. The employee Casper suspects a scam connected to the mortuary owner, Karl Ganns, and Casper's visit escalates the stakes surrounding the mortuary operation.

Casper visits Robert's office posing as a concerned relative of his brother Louie. Louie shoots Robert in the head, leaving him temporarily blinded; Casper then pushes Louie out a window to his death. The assault knocks the investigation off-balance but confirms a broader trap is in play.

With his sight returning, Ordway deduces the involvement of a plastic surgeon by matching a signature to Gypsy Corsello, a hardened criminal who could have altered his face. He disguises himself as Pete Hastings to infiltrate Gypsy's circle and lure the mastermind into the open. The plan is to unmask the person behind the impersonations and the fraud.

Robert goes to the mortuary with his undercover disguise; Karl Ganns tries to poison him, but Robert fights back and knocks Ganns unconscious. Police arrest Ganns and Gypsy Corsello, while Claire Foster and Connie Day are found dead in their locations. The mortuary operation is exposed, but the head behind it remains at large.

All remaining suspects are invited to a party at Ordway's house, where he pretends to be blind to avoid tipping off the criminals. Alec Girard returns and confesses that Walter's murder was tied to Walter knowing Girard's past as a surgeon, and he tries to poison Ordway with a drink. Unaware that the police are listening, Girard is arrested on the confession, and the poison is later pumped from Ordway's stomach.
