Joyride

At Rita's charity event in County Kerry, Mully overhears that his father James has stolen the collection money. Realizing the debt and lies behind it, he snatches the cash and runs. He finds a stationary taxi and drives off, determined to escape his father's reach.

Mully grabs the stationary taxi and discovers Joy and her newborn Robin hidden in the back seat. He manages to calm the crying baby and keep Joy from panicking as he takes the wheel. Knowing he is an underage and unlicensed driver, he continues driving to stay ahead of pursuit.

Mully swaps the taxi for a car at a used-car lot and insists on driving. Joy and he take backroads to remain undetected as they avoid police checks. Their initial quarrel loosens as they realize they need each other.

They clash at first over responsibility, but as the journey continues they begin to trust each other. The presence of the infant Robin forces them to cooperate and protect her. The long road strengthens an unlikely bond between them.

When the car runs out of fuel, Mully suggests taking turns asking questions to pass the time. He explains how the hospice money was stolen to cover debts, while Joy reveals her plan to give up Robin and fly to Lanzarote. The exchange reveals each character's desperation and humanity.

Mully calls James, who pushes to head for a ferry, and Joy initially resists. A police checkpoint scare pushes her to alter course and accept the ferry option.

While waiting for the ferry, Mully helps Joy learn how to breastfeed Robin, a moment that shows his protective instinct. Joy shares that she and Rita were classmates, with Rita remembered as beautiful. The conversation deepens the fragile trust between them.

Joy calls her friend Mags to report that she gave birth a week early and that the baby is named Robin, who has breastfed. She also reveals a troubling childhood memory of her father’s infidelity and a near drowning, hinting at deeper trauma. These revelations foreshadow the choices she will face.

Morning finds Joy returning the hospice money to Mully so he can return it, while Mully grapples with the implications of betrayal. She then delivers Robin to Mags and heads toward Kerry airport with the weight of her decision on her shoulders.

Joy boards a Spain-bound plane but immediately has a change of heart and tries to be let off. She races back to find Mully, initially angry with him but then confronted by James demanding the money.

At the water's edge, James appears and demands the money. Joy tries to shield Mully, but he runs toward the sea and tosses the cash over his shoulder. James retrieves the money, while Joy dives to rescue Mully from danger.

With Mags calling for the return of Robin, Joy drives by the pub with Mully to continue their mission of reuniting the baby with those who can care for him. They decide to return the stolen money and keep moving forward together, despite an uncertain future. The film closes on a note of cautious hope.
