At twenty, Muslim law student Ibn Battuta (1304–1368), whose full name was Abu Abdullah Muhammed Ibn Abdullah Al Lawati Al Tanji Ibn Battuta, departed Tangier in 1325 on a pilgrimage to Mecca, a trek of roughly 3,000 miles eastward. The 18‑month journey exposed him to bandit attacks, rescue by Bedouins, fierce sandstorms and severe dehydration.
