Manmohan Krishan, the jailor, oversees convicts undergoing rigorous imprisonment. His daughter, Shalini, is a young poet whose verses carry grace and imagination. One day, while she recites, she meets a fellow poet, Amar, who is also behind bars. The two share a growing connection, and their time together blooms into love despite the grim surroundings of the prison.

Shalini longs to understand why Amar is incarcerated and learns that the official line says he killed the brother of his former lover, Sapna. She cannot accept this accusation and vows to win Amar's release, motivated by love and a sense of justice.

After his release, Amar discovers new kinds of hardship: his mother is living in poverty, and his sister has become a nightclub dancer. An old prison friend, Madanlal Dogra, arrives offering help, but danger soon follows when Madanlal is murdered by rivals.

Facing threats, Amar assumes the alias of Madanlal Dogra and takes a job as an estate manager for Thakur Rajpal Singh. In this position, he enters a world of intrigue where the Thakur's wife is believed to be plotting his murder. Meanwhile, Shalini re-enters the story as the Thakur's daughter, bringing the lovers into closer proximity amidst mounting peril.

As authorities close in on the truth behind the Madanlal Dogra case, Amar's mother makes a desperate dash to Darjeeling to defend him, only for her to be kidnapped by Kundan and his family. In a dramatic showdown, Amar fights to save Thakur Rajpal Singh and his household, ultimately proving his innocence and affirming his commitment to Shalini. The tale concludes with a hard-won union: Amar and Shalini marry and settle in Darjeeling, surrounded by his reluctant family and the lingering shadows of the past.
