Merry Fellows, the Soviet Union’s first musical comedy, unfolds in 1930s Odessa and Moscow. Shepherd Kostya Potekhin (Utyosov) is mistakenly hailed as an international concert star. He falls for the spirited Anyuta (Orlova) and pretends to be the “star” for her. Amid a succession of comedic musical numbers, Kostya becomes the leader of a jazz band, stages a riotous performance at the Odessa Music Hall, and ultimately earns a coveted engagement at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre.
