From a motel in Missouri, Jesse calls his ex-wife Jenn. He explains his drinking and the emotional baggage that still ties them together, including the pain behind the affair that contributed to his downfall. The call underscores his fragile state as he considers the Paradise job.

Jesse arrives in Paradise, Massachusetts, and checks into the Paradise Motel. He is met with suspicion about why he was hired and what the town expects from a chief in trouble. The new job introduces him to the local power dynamics.

Despite being visibly drunk, Jesse is offered the position of police chief. His skepticism about the motives behind the hire grows as he questions the town's interest in someone with his past. He accepts, hoping the job will anchor his recovery.

Jesse responds to a domestic dispute and meets Joe Genest, a thug tied to Boston gangsters. Genest taunts that the restraining order means little, then Jesse knocks him down and asserts control, warning of consequences if harm comes to Mrs. Genest.

The town attorney Abby Taylor visits and chastises Jesse for the assault, but she is drawn to him. They begin to develop a romantic connection, though Jesse remains emotionally tethered to his ex-wife. Their relationship adds a layer of complexity to the case.

Genest follows former chief Lou Carson and brutalizes him by pushing his car off a cliff, killing him. With Carson out of the way, Genest and Hathaway align to protect the money laundering operation and quiet the threat.
