During the Avignon Theatre Festival, two actors, Stéphane and Fanny, find themselves in separate productions—a popular comedy for Stéphane and a classical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s work for Fanny. Hoping to win her affection, Stéphane pretends to be performing the lead role of Rodrigue in Corneille’s celebrated play, Le Cid. This fabrication sets off a series of events as he attempts to maintain the charade and impress Fanny with his supposed theatrical prowess.
