Jassy

Jassy is the daughter of Tom Woodroofe who carries the villagers' gaze due to her gypsy mother and her gift of second sight. She endures social ostracism yet remains resilient, using her insight to navigate a world of power plays at Mordelaine. Her loyalty to Barney and determination to secure a fair future for herself push the plot toward justice and renewal.

Nick is a calculating landlord who buys Mordelaine through gambling and deceit. His authority over the estate comes under threat as cheating, infidelity, and revenge force him into increasingly violent and alarming choices, culminating in a fatal accident and a murder plot.

Tom is Jassy's father, a sturdy, protective figure whose family and village loyalties shape much of the narrative. He acts as a moral compass and a focal point for the community's grievances, even as he leads protests against the Helmars’ rule.

Barney is Hatton's son who rescues a young woman early on and falls in love with Jassy. His romance with Dilys adds tension, but his loyalty to Jassy remains central as he navigates family expectations and personal affection.

Mrs. Hatton is Barney's mother, a protective matriarch who guides her son’s choices and pushes Jassy to adapt to the household’s norms. Her wary stance toward Jassy foreshadows the broader resistance to outsiders.
