Set in 1920s Nagasaki, Aihara, sold into a geisha house as a child, becomes a master samisen player renowned for elegance. She supports street children, especially flower vendor Oyuki. When a rival geisha insults her, a turf war looms, but businessman Tojiro Koga proposes an artistic contest and asks Aihara to record fading Nagasaki folk songs.
