Otsuya, daughter of a wealthy merchant, elopes with Shinsuke, a low‑level employee of her father. While fleeing, the tattoo master Seikichi is drawn to her skin and makes her his canvas. He tattoos a spider on her back, marking her as a man's property. The design changes how others treat her and seems to affect Otsuya’s demeanor.
