Vilhelm Canitz, a Swedish doctor of literature, arrives at a Lugano medical clinic for what he treats as an extended vacation, confident in his health. There he encounters several terminal patients, among them Vellamo Toivonen (Lindfors). Each faces mortality differently—through self‑destruction, denial or reckless behavior. The story examines their coping mechanisms.
