Amitabh Bachchan plays Amarnath, widely known as Amar, a bright and principled young man whose education outpaces the job opportunities that won’t bend his ethics. When a reform-minded politician, Kader Khan Shankar Narayan, faces a brutal crowd and is publicly humiliated, Amar steps in to rescue him. This act earns Shankar Narayan’s respect and sets in motion a mentorship that pushes Amar toward the police service. He trains hard, passes the IPS exams, and is posted as an ACP who remains committed to honest service, even when the system around him grows more tangled and treacherous.
On the beat, Amar crosses paths with Asha, Sridevi the daughter of the wealthy Seetharam. The two fall for each other, and their relationship finds cautious approval from Seetharam after Shankar Narayan’s gentle insistence. What begins as a hopeful romance quickly becomes a test of loyalty as Amar’s sense of duty clashes with the undercurrents of power and money that swirl around the city. Amar believes in justice, but the world he steps into is not so simple, and it doesn’t stay pure for long.
Amar uncovers a crime network that reaches into the upper echelons of power and includes Shankar Narayan and Seetharam. He is pulled into their orbit and becomes a pawn in a dangerous web. A photo surfaces, showing Amar handing a briefcase to Seetharam’s partner, who is revealed to be an international smuggler named Richard Louis. Under relentless pressure, Amar is ordered by Seetharam to retrieve diamonds from Richard Louis and to shield the smuggling operation from the police. The tension between his oath to protect the law and the coercive grip of the network puts Amar at a breaking point, forcing him to navigate a moral labyrinth with consequences that echo far beyond his own life.
Amar carries out the dangerous mission but ends up killing Richard Louis, a act that rockets him to a volatile kind of public adoration. Yet the fallout spirals as Inspector Pratap, a colleague, issues a warrant to search Amar’s home by orders from the commissioner. Pratap suspects Amar’s involvement but cannot locate the missing diamonds because Amar has hidden them inside his own fake bandages. The weight of betrayal hangs heavy, and Asha, misunderstandings and fear drive a painful rift between them, separating them with their newborn child.
The personal crisis nudges Amar toward drastic choices. He resigns from the police and, at Shankar Narayan’s urging, officially enters the political arena. With the syndicate’s backing, Amar rises to the position of Chief Minister and forms a government that uses the apparatus of power to crown its own ambitions. In a tense cabinet meeting, Amar reveals his intent to cleanse the system by any means, even if it means massacre, and he turns on his former allies, eliminating Seetharam, Shankar Narayan, and others who stood in his way. Asha learns of Seetharam’s manipulations and the coercion he exercised, and she reconciles with Amar, choosing to stand by him as the storm rages around them. Ultimately, Amar surrenders to the police for the crimes he committed in the name of reform, and as the crowd gathers, they call for his release, a final twist that leaves the city wondering about justice, loyalty, and the price of power.
