Inferno

Eddie Lomax rides an Indian motorcycle across a salt flat when the bike breaks down. He drinks and passes out, then wakes to see his old Army friend Johnny Sixtos. Eddie speaks of haunting dreams and a desire to end his life, intending to give Johnny the motorcycle before killing himself. He begins firing at random, a shot hits a passing truck, and three Hogan brothers stop him, beat him, and shoot him; the youngest, Petey, then executes him and steals the bike.

After the attack, Johnny reappears and carries Eddie to his home. Johnny nurses Eddie back to health, saving him from the injuries inflicted by the Hogan brothers. As Eddie recovers, his resolve to take revenge grows stronger and sets the stage for his return to town.

Recovering, Eddie goes back into town to reclaim his motorcycle. He discovers his gun has been sold to a local store, and when attackers strike, he shoots them and kills two men inside. He then frees Eli Hamilton from a back room where he had been kept prisoner, and Eli supplies Eddie with more guns and ammunition for the coming fight.

In town, Eddie meets Rhonda Reynolds at a diner, a friend of Johnny. There he learns the identities of the three men who attacked him, and he hires Jubal Early to help clean up the bodies at Eli's.

Eli and Jubal inform Eddie that the Hogan brothers work with the Heathens gang. With this knowledge, Eddie heads to the Bomb Bay Cafe to confront them, and he guns down three more men while rescuing two women. He then tells the Heathens that the Hogans hired him, complicating the gang's loyalties.

Back at his hotel, two women he has helped insist on thanking him and they have sex. The acts of gratitude become part of the shifting power dynamics between Eddie and the local gangs, as favors and violence intertwine.

A late-night meeting reveals that the Heathens believe the Hogans betrayed them by hiring Eddie. Both groups prepare to ambush each other, and Eddie's actions help ignite chaos, with large explosions contributing to the violence of the confrontation.

Johnny reappears during the melee to draw attention away from Eddie, making a selfless sacrifice in the process. After an unsuccessful lynching attempt, Eddie manages to escape with Johnny by his side, battered but alive.

Eddie, Eli, Rhonda, and Jubal booby-trap Eddie's hotel room to neutralize the gang. Eddie then systematically kills most of the gang members, consolidating his vendetta and plunging the town deeper into the conflict.

Eddie duels Matt Hogan, who gains the upper hand at first. Several townspeople intervene and shoot Matt, leading to a debate over who truly killed him and marking a chaotic, unresolved end to the immediate feud.

With the violence subsiding, the town settles into a tense peace. Eddie leaks a newspaper story about UFOs causing 28 disappearances, a move that attracts tourism and prosperity. He rides off with Rhonda, accompanied by a vision of Johnny beside him.
