Set between 1788 and 1843 in Wallachia under Phanariot rule, the film follows young Iancu Jianu, who becomes a folk hero resisting oppression. With his companion Mereanu, he stages daring acts against the tyrannical regime. Their struggle leads Jianu to meet Tudor Vladimirescu, leader of the 1821 uprising, and together they wage a fierce fight for justice, freedom and independence.
