Wang Zi Hao is a Primary 6 expatriate student from Shanghai who faces persistent academic struggles at Yuzher Primary School in Singapore. He battles with English, Mathematics, Chinese, and Science, while spending long hours at home absorbed in video games. His strict mother counters this by channeling his energy into intense memorisation drills and a relentless schedule of tuition classes at Xin Yuan Fei Edu Hub (新源飞教育一站式). Despite the heavy workload, Zi Hao shines in Chinese and Mathematics, so tuition isn’t needed for those subjects.

As his grades begin to improve, Zi Hao finds himself in a quiet rivalry with the school’s top student and his good friend, Jayden Lee Jun Wei. The dynamic shifts when Jayden’s overbearing mother notices the budding competition and warns her son to keep his distance from Zi Hao. This warning strains their once-close friendship, as Jayden’s mother treats excellence as a zero-sum game, pressuring him to view Zi Hao as a threat rather than a ally.

A new form teacher arrives—Mr. Lee—whose intelligence and appearance quickly win the students’ admiration. His presence adds another layer to the classroom dynamics, especially as Zi Hao’s academic journey unfolds amidst personal and social pressures.

Meanwhile, Zi Hao’s mother wrestles with a faltering marriage. Her husband in China refuses to provide financial support, which pushes the family toward eviction from their semi-detached home and into a smaller HDB flat. A divorce text from his husband marks a painful turning point. In the midst of these upheavals, Zi Hao’s mother enrolls him in an English speech competition, where he competes against Jayden and other classmates. Jayden is given the task of speaking on “My Mother,” a topic that stirs up emotional strain due to his fraught relationship with Sophia and leads him to a last-place finish. Zi Hao’s own turn on the same topic lands him fifth place. Enraged, Sophia manipulates Jayden into planting cheat notes in Zi Hao’s pencil case, further entangling the boys in a web of pressure and deceit.

During the Science Preliminary Examination, the cheat notes catch Zi Hao’s eye, and he is confronted by Mr. Lim and Mr. Lee. The handwriting doesn’t match Zi Hao’s, revealing that Rachel—another classmate—wrote the notes to help Jayden. Under the pressure of interrogation, Jayden breaks down and confesses that his mother physically and verbally abuses him for losing to Zi Hao. Hearing this, Zi Hao feels a surge of sympathy and, in a selfless act, lowers his own Mathematics score by crossing out correct answers.

Sophia is later summoned to a meeting with Mr. Lee to address her mistreatment of Jayden. Feeling humiliated and defensive, she files a formal complaint against Mr. Lee, wrongly accusing him of meddling in her marriage with Kelvin Lee. The school’s principal, Mrs. Tan, attempts to mediate, but the dispute culminates in Mr. Lee’s resignation. His departure leaves Class 6A in tears and sadness.

The following day, Jayden’s mother and Zi Hao’s mother argue about the implications of Zi Hao’s deliberate score loss. In a moment of extreme anger, Sophia attempts to report Wen Ting to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority in a bid to deport her back to China. Jayden steps in to intervene, confronting his mother and declaring that he no longer wants a mother like her. In a brutal turn, his mother slaps him, and he runs into the street, where a car accident leaves him in a coma.

In the wake of the tragedy, his mother experiences profound guilt and offers a sincere apology to Wen Ting. Meanwhile, Zi Hao and his classmates complete the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) and proceed to different secondary schools, marking a transition that reflects both change and resilience.

The film closes on a hopeful, reflective note: Jayden awakens from the coma and decides to enroll in a neighborhood secondary school rather than a prestigious one. This choice underscores a core message of the story—the measure of success is not the rank of a school, but the effort put into studying and doing one’s best. The story lingers on themes of pressure, friendship, family strain, and the genuine courage it takes to grow.
