House Hunting

Charlie Hays, Emmy, and Susan, along with the Thomson family, arrive at the seemingly perfect house on 70 private acres after following leads. They hope the new home will provide a fresh start and help Emmy and Susan get along, despite underlying tensions. The road to the property feels tense from the outset as the families approach the house.

While driving back with the realtor's contact, the families nearly strike a distraught girl named Hanna who has had her tongue cut. They decide to take her to the hospital, but as they attempt to leave, they mysteriously end up back at the same house. The sense of being trapped intensifies as the night approaches.

They reach the abandoned house and choose to stay while they seek help. Seven cans of stew appear to correspond to seven people, hinting at a deadly balance the house imposes. The group agrees to endure the strange repetition rather than abandon the property immediately.

Days stretch into a month as the families endure cabin fever and tightening tension within the house. The property ominously records that only one family will claim the house, fueling paranoia among the seven residents. Isolation and fear deepen as strange occurrences persist.

The house suddenly provides only six cans of stew for seven people, triggering panic and suspicion. Leslie begins to hallucinate her deceased daughter Lizzy, leading to a devastating act. The others struggle to make sense of the scarcity and the haunting atmosphere.

Emmy and Charlie begin seeing visions of Emmy's mother, who appears before them with her throat slashed. Susan senses there is more to the story and grows increasingly withdrawn. The house's influence deepens as past traumas surface in their minds.

Guided by clues from the mute Hanna and a failing jigsaw puzzle, Emmy attempts to walk backward toward the road in a bid to escape. Jason makes a violent move toward Emmy, but Hanna intervenes by striking him with a log. Jason is knocked to a fatal end when he impales himself on a branch, and Don intervenes, though Jason begins to bleed out.

Jason confesses to his father that he struck a jogging woman with his car, revealing the hidden victim in the house. Don decides to free the Hayses and attempt an exit, but fear and paranoia complicate the plan. Upon his return at night, Susan attacks and kills him with an axe.

With the food supply cut off, Charlie's grip on reality crumbles and he becomes increasingly erratic. The ghostly presence of the woman Jason killed torments him, culminating in a choking attack. The mounting horror drives him toward a violent culmination.

Charlie, convinced that Susan has betrayed Emmy, descends into madness and kills Susan with a stew can. Emmy and Hanna flee with Charlie in pursuit, but Charlie kills Hanna; Emmy retaliates and shoots Charlie, ending the immediate threat. The house's hold remains unbroken, with violence replacing hope.

Emmy and Hanna finally reach the road and encounter another family that ferries Emmy back toward the house. They discover there are two families now waiting to view the house, unaware of the supernatural trap. Distracted by ghosts, Emmy is dragged aside and her tongue is cut out by the Realtor, signaling the start of a new cycle.
