Jay, an escaped mental patient and PCP addict, strangles a parked motorist and steals his car. He then drives through Los Angeles and runs down an elderly woman. These actions establish Jay's threat before the ranch gathering begins.

Nine people gather at Harold Bradley's ranch for Thanksgiving on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Linda and Gail decide to borrow Scott's car to fetch wine for the celebration. The mood is festive but uneasy, as the guests settle in for the night.

Jay cuts off the house power, plunging the ranch into darkness and chaos. Harold starts the emergency generator and heads outside to fetch more gasoline, unaware of Jay's proximity. The party loses its festive glow as fear creeps in.

Harold discovers Jay's abandoned station wagon and tries to remove its battery. Jay bursts from hiding and body-slams onto the car hood, crushing Harold's skull in a brutal assault. The household security is shattered in an instant.

Jay, hidden in the backseat of Wayne's car, ambushes him as he goes to search for Harold. He garrotes Wayne, ending the search and signaling the killer's readiness to strike again. The danger now surrounds the entire property.

Linda and Gail, lost while seeking wine, encounter Jay on the grounds. Jay slams Gail's head into a rock and stabs Linda to death with a broken bottle. The house erupts into panic as more guests realize the danger.

Maria goes to the washroom inside the house, and Jay stabs her, adding another victim to the chaos. The violence spreads through the house as the victims mount.

Jay pursues Mistake around the property and catches him, fatally shocking him with his own electric guitar and portable amplifier. The twisted kill becomes a grim signature of Jay's rampage.

Scott returns from gathering firewood, discovers Maria's body, and runs back to the ranch to help Jennifer and Angel. They work to secure the building against Jay's intrusion and protect the remaining guests.

Jay forces his way inside and attempts to strangle Scott, but Jennifer wounds him with a knife, buying time for the others to reorganize. The struggle exposes the vulnerability of everyone inside.

Jay recovers and slits Scott's throat, cutting off the last line of defense. He then pursues Jennifer, who hides and faints, hoping to survive the night.

In the morning, Jennifer awakens and is assaulted by Jay as she ventures outside, signaling that danger persists despite the night’s terror. The threat lingers as dawn breaks.

Angel notices the crisis and alerts a pair of police officers. They arrive at the ranch to confront Jay and restore some sense of order amid the chaos.

The officers blast Jay with a shotgun and place Jennifer in a patrol car with Angel. As one officer checks on Jay, his eyes suddenly open, leaving his fate unresolved and ending the scene on a strangling note of ambiguity.
