What Happens in Hey Jude: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Hey Jude (2018) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Dominic is the proprietor of an antique shop located in Cochin. His family consists of his wife Maria, their daughter Andrea, and their son Jude. Jude is a brilliant mathematician with a keen interest in oceanography, yet he struggles with social interactions and exhibits a level of immaturity uncommon for his age. He finds himself friendless and often clashes with his father. After losing his job, Jude is compelled by Dominic to assist him at the antique shop.

The story takes a turn when Dominic receives news from Goa regarding the death of his aunt Olivia, which entitles them to inherit her property along with Jude. Thus, Dominic, Maria, and Jude travel to Goa for the funeral and property settlement, while Andrea remains in Cochin to manage her studies and assist with the family business. Upon their arrival in Goa, they encounter Dr. Sebastian along with his daughter Crystal Ann Chakraparambu, the current tenants of the outhouse connected to the late aunt's bungalow. Crystal operates a beachside café and is also part of a music band.

Dominic, prone to annoyance, is disturbed by Sebastian’s cheerful demeanor and their late-night music rehearsals. Despite Sebastian holding a valid lease, Dominic is determined to evict them at the earliest opportunity. He repeatedly sends Jude as a messenger to communicate new “house rules” to Sebastian. Tensions escalate initially between Jude, Sebastian, and Crystal, but as time progresses, friendships begin to blossom. Dr. Sebastian, a psychologist, gradually realizes that Jude’s intense focus on numbers and his social challenges indicate he might be on the autism spectrum.

One evening, Crystal invites Jude to a party, but his anxiety prevents him from attending. Frustrated, Crystal reacts impulsively by throwing stones at Jude's window, leading Jude to understand her struggles with bipolar disorder, for which she is undergoing treatment. The following day, Jude offers an apology, and the two reconcile their differences. Together with Sebastian, they strive to enhance Jude’s social skills. Throughout this journey, Crystal learns about Jude’s exceptional knowledge in oceanography, and they work on overcoming Jude's fear of water by teaching him swimming and diving techniques.

As Dominic continues his pursuit to eject Sebastian and Crystal from the property, Jude forms a bond with them, experiencing friendship for the first time in his life. He also develops a fondness for the Goan lifestyle. With Crystal's encouragement, Jude rehearses for an interview at the National Institute of Oceanography. Although he fails the interview due to his lack of social proficiency, one of the interviewers takes note of a conversation between Jude and Crystal, recognizing Jude’s exceptional talent in oceanography.

However, Jude's parents express disapproval of his interest in Crystal’s music band and his desire to seek employment in Goa. They insist he sever ties with both Crystal and Sebastian. Frustrated, Jude decides to follow Crystal's suggestion and briefly runs away with her and her friends to perform music at a wedding, where they share enjoyable moments and develop close feelings for one another. Yet, when Crystal attempts to kiss Jude, he shies away, leaving her frustrated.

Simultaneously, Dominic begins to soften after realizing Dr. Sebastian is aiding Jude with his autism. He decides to alter his approach towards both Jude and Sebastian. Later, Jude returns to Goa, only to learn from Dominic that he wishes to host a party and would like Jude to invite his newfound friends. Excitedly, Jude rushes to Crystal’s house to extend the invitation, but in his search, he uncovers his video journal tapes and Sebastian's notes about his behavior. Anger surges within him as he feels betrayed by both Sebastian and Crystal for using him to serve their interests. Crystal, in turn, tells him to sever all ties with her.

Tragedy strikes when, at the party, Dominic suffers a fatal heart attack, altering the family's plans. They decide to leave behind their newly inherited property and return to Cochin. Before departing, Jude attempts to bid farewell to Crystal, but she refuses to allow him to speak. Back in Cochin, Jude takes charge of the antique shop, discovering anomalies in the accounts that reveal his sister Andrea has embezzled money for her boyfriend. Despite this revelation, he chooses to forgive her. As time passes, Jude receives a letter from Crystal, informing him of her decision to leave for Shimla to volunteer and bring about change in her life.

As days roll by, Jude receives an offer for a more favorable position at the National Institute of Oceanography in Goa. Encouraged by his mother, the family returns to Goa where Jude embraces his new job. He maintains communication with Crystal, heeds her advice, and gradually becomes more socially adept.

Eventually, Crystal returns to Goa, greeted cheerfully by her family and friends. Jude and Crystal’s friendship endures, remaining intact and highlighting the happiness in their respective lives.
