In 1985 four middle‑aged Yugoslav émigrés return to Belgrade for Mariana’s funeral, a beautiful compatriot they once nicknamed “Esther.” She had been the coxswain of their rowing crew, last seen in 1953 when they ferried her across the Adriatic to Italy. Flashbacks trace their initiation into sex, smoking, rock‑and‑roll, Hollywood and Swedish films, black‑market jeans, and a rivalry with Ristic, a Communist youth leader they despised.
