Director Lydia Bobrova portrays the bleak Russian countryside through episodes in the lives of three brothers and their families. Though distinct in character, each brother endures the dreariness of kolkhoz life. The title echoes a nostalgic Russian song, contrasting the wild geese’s chance to migrate with the rural populace’s inability to leave.
