As the sun began to set on a stifling summer evening in 1987, Jenna Rink (Jennifer Garner) yearned to escape her uncomfortable teenage existence and reach the heights of popularity. The Six Chicks, dominated by the alluring Tom-Tom, were the queens of the social scene, and Jenna was determined to gain their favor. With a clever plan, she coerced the group to attend her 13th birthday party in exchange for completing their schoolwork.

At the same time, Matty Flamhaff (Mark Ruffalo), Jenna’s best friend and neighbor, secretly cherished feelings for her that he believed would never be reciprocated. In a heartfelt gesture, he presented her with a beautifully crafted dollhouse sprinkled with “magic wishing dust.” Unbeknownst to Jenna, this seemingly innocent gift would trigger a spectacular shift in her life.

When the night of the party arrived, the Six Chicks, including Jenna’s crush Chris Grandy, showed up. However, their façade of friendship quickly crumbled as they misled Jenna, leaving her heartbroken when they betrayed her trust for the sake of homework. In the depths of despair, Jenna locked herself away, tears falling, as she pleaded with the stars to transform her into a glamorous and self-assured adult. The magic of the dust responded to her plea, enveloping her in a shimmering glow as she made her wish.

Upon awakening the next morning, Jenna was shocked to find herself 17 years in the future, now a successful editor at Poise magazine, working side by side with her loyal friend Lucy Wyman. Yet, their professional bliss was threatened by their fierce competitor, Sparkle, which sought to dethrone Poise as the leading fashion magazine.

As Jenna grappled with her astonishing new reality, she sought out Matty, now trying to make a name for himself as a photographer in Greenwich Village. The sorrowful truth emerged: Jenna had transformed into a person very much like her former tormentors, losing her childhood connections and her true self in the process.

Despite her outward success, Jenna’s role as editor brought her internal conflict. As she mentored young teens and participated in a spirited “Thriller” dance at the office, the weight of her choices loomed large. Plagiarism, a strained relationship with her parents, and questionable romances stained her recent accomplishments.

Amid Lucy’s scheming to undermine Jenna’s position, tensions ran high. Faced with the consequences of her actions, Jenna reached her breaking point and returned to her childhood home in New Jersey, seeking the comfort of her family’s love. It was here that she began the painful, yet vital, process of self-discovery, rekindling her bond with Matty, and ultimately choosing a new direction in life, unhindered by her past.

Jenna’s journey took a dramatic turn when the truth about her relationship with Matty came to light. During a pivotal moment, Wendy alerted her to an impending wedding—Matty was set to marry, and she had to confront him before it was too late. Further complicating matters, Kneeland revealed that Lucy had secured the position of editor-in-chief at Sparkle, further unveiling a brutal betrayal against Jenna.

In a surge of anger and desperation, Jenna rushed to Matty’s house, laid bare the betrayals, and urged him to reconsider their relationship. Matty, bearing the scars of their past, revealed that he had known of Lucy’s deceit long ago. Nevertheless, his love for Jenna was still evident in the cherished dollhouse he preserved through the years—a powerful symbol of his enduring affection.

With tears rolling down her cheeks, Jenna left with the dollhouse in hand as memories of forgotten wishes washed over her. Suddenly, she awoke back in 1987, reliving her 13th birthday without any time having passed. When Matty found her in a familiar hiding place, a wave of joy filled the air as they embraced and shared their first kiss.

The curtain fell on Lucy’s unmasking, and Jenna enacted her own brand of vengeance by destroying the homework that had once consumed Lucy’s existence. Seizing her second chance, Jenna chose a different path, leading her to a fulfilling life alongside Matty in a joyous marriage. As they stepped into their new life, their charming suburban home mirrored the dollhouse, a beautiful reminder of enduring love and the magic of new beginnings.
