Calvin Weir-Fields, a struggling writer, receives an unusual recommendation from his therapist. He is encouraged to create a narrative about a strong bond between a writer and a character deeply connected to his beloved dog, Scotty.

Inspired by his therapist's suggestion, Calvin vividly dreams of a woman named Ruby Sparks, bringing her to life in his story. He becomes captivated by Ruby's character and finds himself lost in writing her tale, which flows effortlessly from his typewriter.
