Angélique, a successful art student who moonlights at a cafe and housesits for a wealthy family, starts a forbidden romance with Dr. Loïc Le Garrec, who is married. She clings to the belief that Loïc will leave his wife for her, even as her friend David worries about the riskier path she’s choosing. The couple’s affair coincides with a painful turning point in Loïc’s life: his wife Rachel suffers a miscarriage, and the couple briefly splits as Angélique fantasizes about a romantic escape to Florence. But Loïc decides to stay with his wife, a decision that shatters Angélique’s confidence and sends her into a downward spiral.
As Angélique’s world unravels, she learns that Loïc has been accused of assaulting one of his patients, Sonia Jasmin. She travels to Sonia’s home intending to persuade her to drop the charges, and a confrontation erupts, culminating in Sonia’s heart attack and death. In a reckless bid to regain Loïc’s affection, Angélique stages a break‑in and theft at Sonia’s house, but the plan backfires: Loïc is arrested for Sonia’s murder. After witnessing Loïc embrace his wife as the police drag him away, Angélique returns home, turns on the gas, and lies down to die, hoping to erase the obstacle between them.
The film abruptly rewinds to the opening moment—the pink rose—and replays the events from a different vantage point, this time following Loïc’s perspective as the delivery of the rose unfolds. Loïc receives the flower and initially assumes it came from his wife, a misunderstanding that deepens when he discovers how little he knows Angélique. The two paths cross because Angélique is house‑sitting for their neighbor, and Loïc begins receiving her gifts and messages without realizing who is behind them. He begins to suspect Sonia as the stalker when a confrontation escalates and Sonia suffers a heart attack, subsequently becoming the target of a police investigation himself.
Rachel provides an alibi that clears Loïc, shifting the suspicions away from him. One night, Loïc witnesses an ambulance at his neighbor’s house and instinctively helps Angélique regain consciousness after she attempts to end her life. This act makes him question whether Angélique might be the mysterious stalker, and he starts looking around the house she occupied. In the house, he discovers a life‑sized mosaic of himself made from garbage, a stark symbol of Angélique’s fixation.
The story then converges on a climactic confrontation: Angélique insists that they never had, nor would ever have, a real relationship. When Loïc declares this truth, Angélique strikes him with a brass figurine, sending him tumbling down the stairs. She is arrested and diagnosed with erotomania, ultimately committed to a mental institution. Rachel remains at her husband’s side as he recovers, and years later the couple appears with their young children, while Loïc navigates life with a walker.
Five years pass before Angélique is released. Her therapist congratulates her progress and cautions that continued medication will help, yet a cleaning man discovers pills glued to the wall behind a wardrobe, arranged into a mosaic of Loïc. The mosaic reveals that Angélique has never taken her medication and remains deeply consumed by her obsession with Loïc. The film closes with a quotation from a real erotomaniac: “Though my love is insane, my reason relieves the pain of the heart, telling me to be patient and not lose hope.”
