Set during the 1939 wartime mobilization, the film follows Läppli, a clumsy, loud‑mouthed busybody who is jailed for delivering anti‑military speeches. Later appointed as an officer’s orderly, his well‑meaning but dim‑witted antics continue, producing nonsensical mishaps that highlight the absurdity of chance and rigid militarism. The officers’ quarters are depicted with gentle irony, never with bitter contempt.
