Pete Ivey Jason Dolley is a Brewster High School student who notices that his crush, Cammie Poole Madison Riley has already been asked out by Dill Crawford Wilson, the captain of the basketball team. At home, Pete’s father explains that to get Cammie’s attention, he might need to do something to catch his younger sister Courtney’s eye as well.
On the way to the Brewster High basketball game, Cleatus Poole Mitchel Musso, Pete’s best friend and the Brewster High mascot, reveals a problem: he’s allergic to the mascot suit. He asks Pete to wear the chicken costume in his place, promising that Pete will win a date with Cleatus’s sister if things work out. After a rocky start, Pete discovers that being inside the chicken suit actually draws Cammie’s attention and makes him act with more adventure and confidence than before. This new spark leads Pete to embrace the role of “The Chicken” full-time, discovering a surprising talent he didn’t know he possessed.
Meanwhile, Pete begins to develop a crush on cheerleader Angela Morrisey Josie Loren. The two are selected for the parade float committee and grow closer as they collaborate on the float, blending humor, teamwork, and a shared sense of purpose.
As parade day arrives, the town rolls out for the festival and the antics of “The Chicken” become a crowd favorite. A moment of trouble arises when Cleatus is inadvertently exposed, forcing Pete to improvise and slip away, even borrowing the sheriff’s car to make a quick exit. Angela notices Pete’s absence and offers him a ride home, and she confides that her fondness lies with the person inside the costume, not with Cleatus herself. Her honesty, together with the town’s growing adoration for “The Chicken”, influences a crucial decision: the sheriff chooses to drop any charges because the spectacle has become a financial and communal boon for Brewster.
Pete returns for the climactic final game, stepping into the spotlight to rally both players and fans. During a timeout, the crowd’s enthusiastic urging leads Pete to remove the mascot head, revealing the man behind the costume and earning cheers from the arena. Cleatus congratulates him, and Pete’s parents express pride in their son’s newfound talent and perseverance. With the crowd behind them, the team clinches a last-second victory, and a celebratory kiss sparks between Angela and Pete as the celebration unfolds. In a cheerful coup de grâce, Cleatus nudges Pete to put the chicken head back on and join the Brewster Roosters to celebrate what would be their only win of the year.
