Every emperor penguin engages in unique mating rituals highlighted by the distinctive 'heartsong.' Norma Jean, a female penguin, is drawn to Memphis, a male penguin, and they become inseparable, united by their harmonious heartsongs.

Norma Jean and Memphis lay an egg together, marking the start of their journey as parents. While Norma Jean goes out fishing with other females, Memphis stays behind to protect their vulnerable egg.

Challenges arise during the harsh winter when Memphis accidentally drops their precious egg. This mishap leads to the birth of their chick, Mumble, who grows up to be an unusual penguin.

Mumble is born with a significant difference from other penguins; he cannot sing. Instead, he showcases a remarkable talent for tap dancing, which makes him stand out in the penguin colony.

While venturing out, Mumble has a confrontational encounter with a group of skua. One skua, who claims to have survived an alien abduction, sends Mumble fleeing into a crevice just in time to escape danger.

As he matures, Mumble faces ridicule from the older penguins, particularly their leader, Noah. Despite his dancing talent, he is ostracized, feeling disconnected from the rest of the colony.

After escaping a leopard seal, Mumble finds camaraderie with a group of five adventurous Adelie penguins known as the Amigos. They embrace his dancing skills, celebrating his uniqueness and inclusion in their fun-filled antics.

During one of their quests, Mumble and the Amigos discover a hidden human excavator and seek advice from Lovelace, a rockhopper penguin. Lovelace is convinced he has been blessed with mystical tokens, wearing a six-pack's plastic rings around his neck.

As mating season arrives, Gloria becomes the center of attention from male penguins, but the Amigos set out to help Mumble win her affection. Their efforts result in a lively performance featuring Ramón singing a Spanish version of 'My Way.'

Despite initial difficulties, Mumble manages to wow Gloria with his dancing during the performance. Together, they lead a joyful celebration that showcases their bond and brings the penguin community together through the dance of 'Boogie Wonderland.'

The elders, dissatisfied with the slim fishing fortunes, blame Mumble for their struggles and eventually exiles him from the community. This heartbreaking decision occurs despite Memphis’s pleas for him to conform and stop dancing.

In search of truth, Mumble and the Amigos return to inquire Lovelace, only to find him tangled in the very plastic rings he boasted about. Lovelace reveals he was caught when swimming outside the territory of the elephant seals.

Mumble and the Amigos confront a pair of orcas, heightening the tension of their journey. During this event, Lovelace manages to free himself from the constrictive rings and joins the group in their adventure.

Having spotted a fishing boat, Mumble makes a last push to swim towards it despite his fatigue. His efforts lead to his capture and subsequent placement in Sea World alongside a group of Magellanic penguins, where he feels isolated.

After enduring isolation, Mumble dances in front of a crowd, ignited by a little girl's tapping on the glass. Eventually released with a tracking device, he boldly returns to his colony, where a heartwarming reconciliation with his father occurs as researchers arrive.

Mumble’s story garners attention from the research team, who corroborate his tales of aliens. With the colony united, they perform their dances for the researchers, prompting a global dialogue that ultimately leads to a ban on overfishing in Antarctic waters.
