Every emperor penguin captures the attention of a mate through a distinctive “heartsong.” When a male’s heartsong harmonizes with a female’s, they unite as a couple. Our story begins with Norma Jean, a female penguin who falls for Memphis, a male penguin, and they become inseparable mates. Together, they lay an egg, but while she ventures out with the other females to fish, Memphis stays behind, tasked with caring for their precious egg. However, the harsh winter poses challenges; Memphis accidentally drops the egg, leading to the birth of their chick, Mumble. Unlike typical penguins, Mumble is unable to sing but possesses a unique talent for tap dancing. He harbors a fondness for Gloria, a female penguin renowned for her exceptional singing abilities.
One day, Mumble has a perilous run-in with a group of menacing skua, one of whom claims to bear a yellow band from an alien abduction. Just in the nick of time, Mumble escapes by plunging into a crevice. As he matures into a young adult, Mumble becomes the target of ridicule from the elder penguins, especially their leader, Noah. After a narrow escape from a hungry leopard seal, he finds friendship with five adventurous Adelie penguins known as “the Amigos”—Ramón, Nestor, Lombardo, Rinaldo, and Raul—who celebrate Mumble’s dance skills and welcome him into their circle.
During their escapades, they stumble upon a hidden human excavator but choose to consult Lovelace, a rockhopper penguin who believes he is adorned with mystical tokens—a six-pack’s plastic rings tangled around his neck. As the mating season arrives, Gloria becomes the focal point for many male penguins, while the Amigos mischievously try to help Mumble win her heart. Their attempts culminate in a performance where Ramón sings a Spanish rendition of “My Way.” Although initially out of sync, Mumble’s dancing eventually captivates Gloria, and together they lead a joyful celebration with “Boogie Wonderland.”
However, this revelry does not sit well with the elders, who blame Mumble for their slim fishing fortunes. Despite his father’s pleas to cease dancing to protect his future, Mumble remains steadfast, leading to his exile from their community. Desperate for answers, Mumble and his friends return to Lovelace, only to discover he has struggled with the very plastic rings he once boasted of. Lovelace reveals he got caught while swimming off-limits, beyond the territory of the elephant seals.
Their journey intensifies when Mumble and the Amigos face off against two orcas. Lovelace finally breaks free from the constricting rings during the chaos. Soon after, Mumble spots a fishing boat and, despite his exhaustion, he swims toward it. His efforts lead him ashore in Florida, where he is captured and placed with a group of Magellanic penguins at Sea World. In isolation, he battles despair and futilely attempts to communicate with humans until a little girl taps on the glass, prompting him to dance and draw a crowd.
Eventually released back into the wild with a tracking device, Mumble returns to his colony. He boldly confronts the elders, and a heartwarming reconciliation occurs with Memphis just as a research team arrives. This group confirms Mumble’s stories about the aliens. The colony bands together, showcasing their dance moves in front of the researchers, leading to a global conversation about Mumble’s claims, resulting in a ban on overfishing in Antarctic waters, much to the delight of both the emperor penguins and the Amigos.
