Hallam Foe

Hallam Foe, Jamie Bell, is a teenage loner who lives on his father Julius Foe, Ciarán Hinds’s expansive estate near Peebles. His private world centers on spying on people from a tree house, a habit that shapes how he reads others and negotiates danger. After his mother dies in a drowning two years earlier, Hallam grows convinced that Verity Foe, Claire Forlani, played a part in the tragedy, while his sister Lucy, Lucy Holt, leaves home to attend university. With Lucy gone and his father pressing him to “move on,” Hallam clings to his suspicions as a form of control, even as Verity and Julius push for a clean break.

To escape the house, Hallam travels to Edinburgh and spots Kate, Sophia Myles, an administrator at the Balmoral Hotel. He manages to convince her to hire him as a kitchen porter, and soon he makes a hidden home in the clock tower of the hotel, giving him a sweeping view over Kate’s top-floor flat and a chance to watch her through a skylight. The thrill of watching deepens into something darker as Hallam learns that another senior hotel employee, Alasdair, Jamie Sives, is carrying on an extra-marital affair with Kate. When Alasdair discovers Hallam’s lookout, Hallam tries to leverage the knowledge of the affair to get his job back, but Alasdair sacks him first. Hallam responds by locating Alasdair’s wife and child, a move that demonstrates he can wield information to bend others to his will, until Alasdair relents and reinstates him.

Hallam’s diligence earns him a steady rise at the hotel, and he eventually becomes front-of-house porter. On his eighteenth birthday, Kate invites him to unwind after work; while they share drinks, Hallam opens up about his enduring love for his late mother. Kate seems intrigued by the fixation, and the moment marks the start of a complicated bond between them. Kate invites Hallam home, and though he feels uneasy as she attempts to seduce him, they end up sharing a bed. The following day she refuses a relationship, but later they sleep together after a separate encounter.

When Hallam is watching Kate again, Alasdair confronts her and becomes violent. Hallam descends through the skylight to intervene, and Kate discovers that he has been spying. She tells Alasdair to leave, but she also sees something human in Hallam. She punishes him by making him stand nude and explain why he was spying, and when he recounts his mother’s story, she feels sympathy and lets him stay. She even dons the dress that Hallam has kept that once belonged to his mother, and Hallam, moved by the moment, cries as they fall asleep together.

Meanwhile, Hallam’s father and Verity converge on him after he reports his suspicions about his mother’s death to the police in Edinburgh. Julius’s debts push him to want to develop land on the estate, but Hallam, who stands to benefit under his mother’s will, refuses to cooperate due to his distrust of Verity. Hallam’s anger toward Verity consumes him, and he schemes to drown her in the loch near the family’s home. Yet his humanity wins out, and he revives Verity. It’s only then that his father reveals he had made no attempt to prevent Hallam’s mother from taking her own life. This revelation reframes Hallam’s rage, showing him that the true source of his pain lies with his mother, not Verity, and marks a cathartic turning point.

With this new understanding, Hallam finds a sense of peace as he walks the streets of Edinburgh, finally free to move forward. The film closes on a note of quiet contentment, a young man transformed by confronting the shadows of his past and choosing to live in the present.
