Newly arrived from Holland, Gretchen Van Houck joins her father, who runs an engraving shop in a multicultural tenement. She befriends lively neighbor Pietro and widowed Mrs. Garrity and her children. The mysterious Rogers offers Mr. Van Houck a money‑printing job; the elder accepts, then learns Rogers’ illegal scheme, forcing a moral dilemma.
