Great Expectations

The film commences with a young artist, Finnegan “Finn” Bell (Ethan Hawke), wandering through the picturesque shores of the Gulf Coast in Florida. His world takes a shocking turn when an escaped convict, Arthur Lustig (Robert De Niro), emerges unexpectedly from the ocean and forcibly makes Finn promise to return the next day with essential supplies, including food, medicine, and a bolt cutter to liberate his shackled leg. Finn fulfills this request, only to find that Lustig has ulterior motives, attempting to coerce Finn into taking him by boat to Mexico. However, their plans are thwarted when the police intercept their small vessel at sea and tow Finn back to shore.

The following day, Finn watches in disbelief as news breaks that Lustig has been arrested and is sentenced to death. Meanwhile, Uncle Joe (Chris Cooper) is summoned to the lavish estate of the eccentric and wealthy Ms. Nora Dinsmoor ([Anne Bancroft]), who has become somewhat delusional after being left at the altar years ago. Though initially summoned for a gardening job, Uncle Joe receives a generous sum of money instead, which he casually dubs “gas money.” Accompanying him is Finn, who crosses paths with the spirited and feisty Estella (Gwyneth Paltrow) in the unruly garden. Ms. Dinsmoor, noticing the chemistry between them, implores Finn’s sister, Maggie ([Kim Dickens]), to allow Finn to be a companion for Estella, despite Estella’s apparent disdain for Finn. Driven by financial motives, Maggie agrees.

During his first visit to Ms. Dinsmoor, she expresses disappointment at Finn’s inability to dance but perks up at the prospect of his artistic skills. With only a piece of old wallpaper and makeup, Finn sketches Estella’s portrait at Ms. Dinsmoor’s insistence. As he works, Ms. Dinsmoor ominously warns Finn of the impending heartbreak he will experience from his feelings for Estella. The portrait session concludes with Estella engaging in a playful prank, as she teases Finn with an unexpected kiss while he drinks from a water fountain.

Time passes, and Maggie flees, leaving Joe to raise Finn alone. Finn makes weekly visits to Paradiso Perduto, where he learns to dance with the now-older Estella. One day, she mentions a party she plans to attend, raising Ms. Dinsmoor’s eyebrows at her lack of an escort. Finn seizes the moment to volunteer as her escort. However, he is met with a cold reception at the party, being denied entry due to his name not being on the guest list. Undeterred, Estella finds him outside and insists on visiting him at his home. What ensues is a whirlwind of heavy make-out sessions that crescendo into utter seduction, only for Estella to slip away, claiming to have too much on her plate that evening.

The following day, Finn learns of Estella’s departure to study in Europe, leaving him heartbroken. For the subsequent seven years, he buries his feelings for Estella and his artistic aspirations while assisting Joe with his fishing business. Out of the blue, a lawyer approaches Finn with surprising news: he has been selected for a gallery show in New York City. This revelation astonishes both Finn and Uncle Joe, particularly since Finn has not picked up a brush since Estella left.

Convinced to venture to New York—an art hub as Estella described—it is here that Finn rekindles his artistic passion, drawing everything around him in Tompkins Square Park. To his astonishment, it is there he reunites with Estella, who greets him with a kiss before inviting him to an upscale tea gathering with her affluent acquaintances. Although entranced by Estella, Finn faces humiliation as she introduces her fiancé, Walter Plane ([Hank Azaria]), who teasingly inquires about the cost to draw a portrait of her. This encounter leaves Finn feeling depreciated and cast aside.

In a twist of fate, one morning, Finn wakes to find Estella in his hotel room. While he attempts to capture her beauty on canvas, Estella’s behavior shifts; she suddenly dresses and departs, proclaiming she is busy. Finn, frustrated by her mixed signals, chases after her, demanding to understand why she continues to flout his emotions. Estella seems pained, implying that her heartlessness is the result of her upbringing under Ms. Dinsmoor’s influence.

Walter later visits Finn with a perplexing request for guidance on how to please Estella, further complicating Finn’s emotional turmoil. The lawyer reappears, whisking Finn away to a larger studio for his artwork, where he flourishes in preparation for his gallery event. He insists that Estella must attend, his anticipation building.

When the gallery night finally arrives, Finn searches futilely for Estella amidst the crowd. Instead, he encounters Uncle Joe, who inadvertently makes a scene by spilling glasses of wine, prompting Finn to impulsively urge him to leave. Yet, as Joe departs, Finn’s discomfort with his family and their contrasting lifestyles becomes palpable. He rushes to Estella’s New York abode, only to find Ms. Dinsmoor waiting there instead. She chillingly reveals the news of Estella’s impending wedding, forcing Finn into a state of despair as Ms. Dinsmoor coldly reminds him of her past warnings about heartbreak.

Finn faces an unexpected arrival from Lustig, who cryptically hints at his knowledge of Finn’s unvoiced desires. Their hurried journey to the subway leads to a tragic confrontation, resulting in Lustig being stabbed right before Finn’s eyes. In his final moments, Lustig reveals that he had been the benefactor for Finn’s career, funding all his artistic pursuits as a gesture of gratitude for Finn’s childhood kindness. This revelation, combined with the news of Estella’s wedding, shatters Finn’s world. He retreats to Paris to immerse himself in the art scene, achieving success and crafting a new identity.

Years later, Finn returns to Florida, where he reconciles with Uncle Joe. However, he also finds Paradiso Perduto in ruins, on the brink of demolition. While sitting in the garden, memories flood back, and he imagines seeing young Estella, which leads him to encounter a recently divorced Estella. She admits her lingering thoughts of him and seeks forgiveness for her past cruelty, and in a heartfelt gesture, Finn extends his forgiveness. Their reunion concludes with a sense of warmth and hopeful potential as they stand hand-in-hand, gazing out over the sea, symbolizing a new beginning.
