Following the partition of Bengal, Rashmoni's family migrates to a suburb called Nababganj near Ichapore in West Bengal. In 1949, Somlata, from a poor family, enters Rashmoni’s household as the wife of Chandan, Rashmoni’s younger brother’s son. Rashmoni initially welcomes her, drawn by Somlata’s lack of greed for jewelry. The box and its legacy begin to cast a long shadow over the marriage from its first days.

A few months into Somlata’s marriage, Rashmoni dies, and her lingering attachment to the jewelry begins to haunt the house. The ghost watches over the stash, wary of those who would misuse or steal it. Her presence makes the box a fragile fulcrum of fear, duty, and memory.

To shield the family wealth from increasingly greedy relatives, Rashmoni's spirit hands the jewelry over to Somlata. Somlata accepts the burden, balancing duty to Rashmoni with the demands of a new life in a changing Bengal. The box thus transitions from personal treasure to a public symbol of family lineage.

Somlata uses a portion of the jewels to finance a new sari shop under her own name, a practical move to sustain the family’s future. The act keeps the legacy alive in a modern, commercial form while Rashmoni’s ghost watches closely. The pawning marks a transition from aristocratic preservation to modern entrepreneurship.

The pawns are repurchased, renewing the tension around the jewelry. Somlata unearths Chandan’s mistress, and Rashmoni’s ghost nudges her toward a morally fraught path. The family’s wealth and loyalty tests intensify as old rules collide with new desires.

Somlata becomes involved with Rafique, a Bengali Muslim poet, a romance that strains her duties to Chandan and Rashmoni’s memory. The affair forces hard choices between personal happiness and family obligation. The love story ends tragically when Rafique takes his own life after the affair is exposed.

Rashmoni’s ethereal presence withdraws, then reappears in Somlata’s daughter Chaitali, a young woman who resembles her. This perceived reincarnation bridges past and present, guiding Somlata toward a new sense of duty. The haunting becomes a catalyst for a renewed family coherence.

Chaitali grows into a modern college student and befriends Rashmoni’s ghost, recognizing Rashmoni in her own features. Somlata, trusting this intuition, hands Rashmoni’s jewelry box to Chaitali to safeguard the legacy for future generations. The boundary between past and present becomes palpable in the house.

The narrative moves toward 1971 and the Liberation War. Banwarilal crosses the border to aid the Mukti Bahini and is shot by the Pakistani army. Chaitali donates all the jewelry to the liberation cause, transforming the box into a symbol of both personal salvation and national struggle.

In an abandoned house, Chaitali uncovers Rafique’s last poems and letters that reveal the depth of his love and Somlata’s past with him. She passes these letters to Somlata, triggering a quiet reckoning about love, loyalty, and memory. The revelations reconfigure the family’s relationship with Rashmoni’s legacy.

Somlata confronts the truth of Rafique’s devotion and her own past, and Rashmoni’s spirit finally finds peace. The jewelry, once a tool of possessive power, becomes a testament to love, memory, and resilience across generations. The family reaches a quiet reconciliation as history and hearts settle.
