Beatland revels in long hair, polo necks, jeans, sunglasses, and beat music, while Ballad Isle favors short hair, pressed clothes, and crooners. The two factions live in suspicion of each other, each guarding their territories and musical ideas.

An annual contest pits Beatland against Ballad Isle, overseen by the neutral record company executive Mr. A&R. The competition serves as the battleground for cultural dominance, with each side touting its signature sound. The rivalry remains tense and the possibility of harmony seems remote.

Between contests, the factions secretly infiltrate each other's territories to steal musical ideas. This border-crossing espionage fuels mistrust and keeps the peace fragile.

The overlords of a distant galaxy grow exasperated by Earth's squabbles and decide to act. They send their bungling representative Wilco Roger to restore order and push for reconciliation. He carries a warning: if he fails, he will be exiled to Planet Gonk, a dreaded place of plush toys shuffling to Dixieland jazz.

Wilco Roger lands on Earth and contacts Mr. A&R, who wields influence over the neutral music industry. They quickly learn of a forbidden romance between a Beatland boy and a Ballad Isle girl, a romance that could bridge the two cultures if properly managed. Their meeting marks the start of a plan to engineer harmony.

Mr. A&R uses his cunning and Wilco Roger uses his mystic powers to help the couple unite without fear. They set out to create a musical composition that could satisfy both sides, blending Beatland's energy with Ballad Isle's croon.
